June Is Cataract Awareness Month: Why Early Detection Matters
June is Cataract Awareness Month, and at Gulf Coast Vision Center, we're reminding our community just how important it is to stay on top of your eye health—especially as you age.
👁️ What Are Cataracts?
Cataracts are a clouding of the eye’s natural lens, leading to blurry vision, difficulty with night driving, sensitivity to light, and dull colors. It’s one of the most common causes of vision loss in adults—and one of the leading causes of blindness in the United States.
🚨 Why Early Detection Is So Important
Cataracts develop gradually over time, and many people don’t notice the symptoms until the condition is more advanced. If left untreated, cataracts can eventually lead to blindness.
What’s more—the longer cataracts are left untreated, the more difficult they can be to remove. That’s why regular eye exams are essential. With early detection, cataracts can be monitored and treated with outpatient surgery that has a high success rate for restoring vision.
✅ Protect Your Vision: What You Can Do
Here are some easy steps you can take to preserve your sight:
- Schedule a comprehensive eye exam every 1–2 years, especially if you're over 60.
- Protect your eyes from UV exposure by wearing sunglasses with 100% UVA/UVB protection.
- Maintain a healthy diet rich in antioxidants like vitamins C and E.
- Avoid smoking, which increases your risk of cataract development.
